WICHITA (November 17th, 2024) - Top-seeded Iowa Western Men's Soccer defeated Coastal Bend Community College 2-0 to open Pool A of the 2024 NJCAA D1 National Tournament.
The Reivers (20-0-2) started the scoring in the 32nd minute when Jin Ichikawa's long throw-in skipped high off the head of Seydou Diop and dropped into the far post for the tournament's first goal. Iowa Western held the Cougars (11-4-3) to just one shot in the first half.
IWCC widened its lead in the 68th minute when Angel Lopez drove to the end line and crossed it into the penalty box, where Efraims Valutadatils one-touched it to Diop, and the Midfielder buried it into the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Francesco Tricarico stopped both of Coastal Bend's shots on goal to earn his 14th win and 9th shutout of the season. The win was the 66th shutout under 6th-year head coach Mike Brown and his 10th NJCAA National Tournament victory.
The Reivers will finish Pool A on Tuesday at 10:00 am against Harcum from Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, KS, and can be seen on the NJCAA Network.
