Reivers keep first clean sheet of the year

Council Bluffs, IA – Reivers keep first clean sheet of the year

Reivers put in the required defensive effort today to win their ICCAC home opener versus Iowa Lakes. Freshman goalkeeper Jan Hoffelner and defenders Gustavo Fernandes, Vicente Gallardo, and Massimo Baron made key saves in both halves of the game.  In addition, Joao Burti, Leandro Avila, and Kwesi Allen are proving every game their ability to create and score chances.  The first goal came in the 31st minute when Kwesi Allen sent in a perfectly weighted cross to Joao Burti who headed the ball into the net.  The goal seemed to release the pressure that the Lakers were putting the Reivers under.  The Reivers battled into half time with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was no less of a battle for the Reivers, being outshot 6-5.  However, the Reivers would fail to convert their second penalty kick of the season.  Leandro Avila sailed his penalty kick over the goal.  Hanging on to a 1-0 lead, Avila would have redemption for his missed penalty when he curled a left footed cross to a perfectly timed volley by Allen.  Allen leads the Reivers in goals scored and points, 4 goals and 9 points.

The second goal sealed the victory for the Reivers who are now 3-0-1 (2-0-0) on the season.  Up next for the Reivers is a non-conference game versus Trinidad State Junior College (CO).  The game will be played at the Reiver Soccer Complex at 2:00 pm tomorrow, Saturday, September 17th.  Admission is free and so is the live stream, Reiver Sports Network.
