COUNCIL BLUFFS - Iowa Western Softball swept ICCAC DII Hawkeye Community College on Tuesday afternoon. Caedence Risius dominated in the circle in game one, throwing a complete game one-hitter while striking out five Redtail batters.
The Reivers (10-5) started the game off hot when Freshman Catcher Lauren Black launched a three-run home run over the left-field fence in the bottom of the first inning. The team then added a pair of runs in the 2nd, two runs in the 5th, and ended the game in the 6th inning on an RBI double from Kaci Miller to win 8-0.
Game two had a much different start. Hawkeye (6-9) opened up the scoring in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from Elizabeth Hammand, scoring Lucy Lebo. Iowa Western answered with an RBI single from Black, then added another run in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI triple from Sophomore Shay Cwelich. Hawkeye then took a 3-2 lead with runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, but Cwelich quickly erased that lead with a two-run home run over the right-field fence. The Reivers then scored eight unanswered runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, including an RBI double from Cwelich and a two-run home run from Allie Cromer to walk off the Redtails, 12-3.
Cwelich finished the game a single shy of hitting for the cycle with 4 RBI; Cromer ended her day at the plate 5 for 7, with 3 RBI, a double, two home runs, and four runs scored.
Iowa Western will take on Johnson County for a pair of games on Thursday afternoon at the Dr. John and Jean Marshall Softball/Baseball Complex with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm.
