COUNCIL BLUFFS - Iowa Western Softball swept their home opener on a cold and overcast afternoon against Bryant & Stratton (WI).
The Reivers (9-5) sent their Freshman ace, Olivia Doughtery, to the circle to face the Bobcats (0-2) in game one. Dougherty had no problem through the first six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four. Iowa Western, meanwhile, struck for four runs on nine hits including a two-run double from Jaylynn Brandt to open up the scoring in the 4th inning, taking a 4-2 lead into the final frame.
Then came the top of the 7th. Dougherty struck out Ashlynn Samson to start things off, but gave up three hits and a pair of walks to the next five batters; Morgan Larsen smacked a three-run double to give the Bobcats a 5-4 lead. Kylie Grubbs would come in to relieve Dougherty and ended the scoring with a pair of groundball outs.
The Reivers would respond. Sophomore Emma Hague launched a one-out double into left-center, then with two outs, Navi Schalin singled into leftfield to score Hague from second, tying the game.
In the 8th, Bryant & Stratton's Maddy Birling bunted down the first base line to move Jocelynn Bennett to third after the team started extra innings with a runner on 2nd. Allie Cromer made a great play at third to get Birling hustling down the line. Ashlynn Samson followed with a suicide squeeze, but Grubbs gloved the bunted ball and flipped it to Catcher Lauren Black, who applied the tag on Bennett sliding into home. A groundout to Mariah Herrera at 2nd base ended the top half of the inning.
In the bottom of the 8th, Navi Schalin started on 2nd base and Jaylynn Brandt needed one pitch to slap an RBI double into left field for the walk-off winner. Brandt finished the game 4-4 with a pair of doubles and 4 RBI.
Game two of the doubleheader was much different than game one. The Reivers scored one run in the first and third innings, two runs in the 2nd, and broke the game open with six runs in the 4th inning to win the game 12-0 in five innings. Freshman pitcher Saydee Plummer threw a complete game shutout, scattering four hits, while striking out five Bobcats.
Iowa Western will face Hawkeye at the Dr. John and Jean Marshall Complex on Tuesday at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm after the doubleheader was rescheduled from this past Wednesday's blizzard.
