COUNCIL BLUFFS - 6th-ranked Iowa Western Men's Soccer battled back after giving up a 2nd half goal to defeat Barton County 2-1 at the John & Harriet Wiebe Football & Soccer Complex on Monday night. The Reivers gave up a corner kick early in the 2nd half and Barton's Loic Kanku tipped in a deflected ball to take a 1-0 lead on their only shot of the final 45 minutes.
Iowa Western had plenty of chances in the first half, but Barton Goalkeeper Gabriel Benjamin kept the home team off of the scoreboard including saving a strike from Efraims Valutadatils on a diving save.
The Reivers (12-0-1) out-shot the Cougars (9-5-1) 17-2 and won the corner kick battle, 11-3 but found themselves trailing after 78 minutes. Mikey Lay took a deflected pass into the box and buried his shot to the lower left corner of the net to equalize the game. Nine minutes later, a Cougar defender fell on the ball in the box and was called for a handball to award a penalty kick to Iowa Western. Carlos Camara calmly took the PK and sent a rocket to the top right corner to take the lead.
IWCC then defended the final 2:55 to keep their unbeaten streak alive. The team is back in action on Wednesday against Western Iowa Tech at 6:00 PM.
