Jabenis Leads Reivers to Team Title at Season Opening Blue River Classic

Lincoln, NE

Grant Jabenis picked up his first collegiate win and the Reivers finished 1st and 2nd at this week's Blue River Classic.

The Reivers opened up their fall season over 2 days on 2 different golf courses. Day one was played at Beatrice Country Club in Beatrice, Nebraska, while day two was played at the Highlands golf course in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Reivers battled through rain, wind, and unseasonably low temperatures to pick up their first victory of the season. The team of Grant Jabenis, Thomas Craig, Harry Johnson, Gustav Sjoeberg, and Graedon Woodward won the event with a two day total of 620. Day one brought the worst of the conditions where the guys shot 331. Jabenis fired an opening-round 75 to lead the Reivers and to take 1st place in the event through the halfway point.

"Grant's round was one of the best rounds in Iowa Western history. Shooting 75 is usually disappointing to our guys, but in those conditions, it was very impressive. I think that was the toughest day I have seen in my entire coaching career," Coach Thompson.

Day one saw temps in the mid 40's, high winds, and constant rain, making it near impossible to hold onto the golf club and stay warm. The average score for the entire field at Beatrice Country Club was over 90.

Day two brought similar conditions but with much less rain and the scores improved. Jabenis followed up his 75 with a 69 in the final round to earn his first collegiate victory.  Overall, the team shot 289 to take a seven shot victory.

The team made up of Carson Caylor, Daniel Gutgesell, Jakob Falk Schollert, Kyle Hickey and Marcus Eriksen finished 2nd in the event with scores of 335 and 292.

Five Reivers finished in the top 10:

1 – Grant Jabenis

T3 – Daniel Gutgesell

T3 – Jakob Falk Schollert

T5 – Kyle Hickey

T8 – Gustav Sjoeberg

The Reivers tee it up again at the "W at the Preserve" hosted by Indian Hills Community College on September 21st.
