Lakes Washed Away by Reiver Attack in Council Bluffs

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Fifth-ranked Iowa Western made short work of visiting Iowa Lakes on Tuesday night in the Bluffs.

The Reivers (12-3, 7-0 ICCAC) walked away with their ninth straight victory and remained unbeaten in the conference with a straight-set (25-9, 25-18, 25-9) victory over the Lakers (2-15, 1-13).

Iremnur Elmas led the attack in the opening set, picking up four kills and serving three aces.  Emily Knight also had three kills in the 25-9 win.

Lakes held tough in set two, staying within a pair of points until a late Reiver rally provided the difference in the 25-18 victory.  Maike Bertens scored seven kills to lead IWCC in the second frame.

After the Lakers grabbed a 3-2 lead in the match finale, Elmas helped IWCC take control, picking up three more aces as the Reivers reeled off nine straight points to take a commanding lead.  Bertens tacked on five more kills in the deciding set and Alejandra Marquez earned three as the Reivers wrapped up the match in straight sets.

The competition stiffens for IWCC in the next week, with road matches against Western Nebraska (NJCAA D1 #9), Kirkwood (NJCAA DII #6, #2 ICCAC), and Iowa Central (NJCAA DII #4, #3 ICCAC).  The Reivers will also face 16th ranked Missouri State-West Plains on Thursday the 18th at home as part of a day-night doubleheader with the Grizzlies and Northeast (NE).
