Reivers Open Rare Spring Season with Convincing Straight Set Sweep

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Any chances of an upset victory by visiting Ellsworth (0-1) were quickly squashed by Iowa Western (1-0) in both team's season opener at Reiver Arena.

After 427 days without a match that counted, the Reivers came out strong and ready to compete from the start, dominating the Panthers in a straight-set sweep (25-9, 25-9, 25-12).

Returning setter Reka Kotorman spread the wealth, assisting 23 times over the course of the match, while newcomer Iremnur Elmas took charge offensively with deft serving and owning the net with 10 kills.

Delaney Esterling, out of Council Bluffs Lewis Central high school, showed her skills as well, finishing off five opportunities at the net, while fellow C.B. native Elaina Bohnet also played well in her collegiate debut.

Defensively, IWCC collected 10 blocks off Panther attempts led by freshman Dayan Malave's eight stonings.  Gracie Teeter and Leah Palensky, both returners from last season's squad, dug eight and seven balls respectively on the afternoon.

The Reivers also received solid contributions from Lauren Walenz, Lorraine Perez, Yadhira Anchante, Alejandra Marquez and Maike Bertens.

Match two of the season comes on the road as IWCC travels to Creston, Iowa to face Southwestern on Tuesday before heading to Sterling, Colorado for a weekend tournament.
