WICHITA (November 17th, 2024) - NJCAA No. 2 and top-seeded Iowa Western Women's Soccer defeated Tyler JC 2-1 on Sunday morning on a pair of goals by Sophomore Forward Oruha Hayashi.
The Reivers (15-0-3) opened up the scoring in the 13th minute when Goalkeeper Alice Russell played her goal kick wide to her left to Hinami Ogushi, who touched it to Honoka Norhara. She fed it long to a streaking Hayashi, and the sophomore buried it on one touch past Apache Goalkeeper Saki Tsuchiya's outstretched hands for her 22nd goal of the season.
Tyler (16-6-0) found the equalizer in the 69th minute when Miki Hayashi's shot from 25 yards out sailed over the head of Russell for her 14th goal of the season. Five minutes later, Iowa Western found the go-ahead goal on a corner kick by Hayashi that bent from right to left and deflected off of a Tyler defender and into the back of the net.
Iowa Western fended off a pair of corner kicks by the Apaches late in the game to seal the victory. The win marks the 9th straight NJCAA National Tournament victory dating back to 2022 in Evans, GA. The win is also the 350th in program history and Head Coach Adam Sanchez's 210th of his career, 153rd as a Reiver.
Coach Sanchez's teams are now 29-15 in games decided by one goal and 142-5-3 when the Reivers score first. It's also the first victory over Tyler JC in program history; IWCC had been 0-3-0 all-time against 17th-year Head Coach Corey Rose.
Iowa Western will finish Pool A on Tuesday at 10 am against Laramie County from Stryker Sports Complex with the game being streamed on the NJCAA Network.
