OTTUMWA, Iowa - NJCAA No. 1 Iowa Western opened the 2024 campaign with a pair of matches at Indian Hills this weekend, winning one and drawing one, to remain unbeaten in their last 38 contests.
The Reivers battled No. 7 Navarro on Friday afternoon and found themselves down a player after goalkeeper Alice Russell was sent off at the 23 minute mark, trying to make a one-on-one, goal-saving play. The game would go back-and-forth throughout the day with Navarro opening up the scoring in just the 3rd minute.
Iowa Western trailed 2-1 at the half but found the equalizer in the 76th minute off of the foot of the last year's United Soccer Coaches Player of the Year, Oruha Hayashi. The Bulldogs answered four minutes later to take a 3-2 lead. Hayashi buried her 2nd goal of the game with just 1:30 remining in the game to give the Reivers a draw, 3-3.
Game two on Sunday afternoon was much different. The Reivers pounced on Illinois Central for four goals in the first half, including Hayashi's third of the season in the 14th minute. The Reivers out-shot the Cougars 15-1 and had a 7-0 advatage in corner kicks as well.
Iowa Western continues it's unbeaten streak that dates back to August 27th, 2022 when the Reivers began their streak of 38 in a row that they have not lost, including a pair of NJCAA D1 National Titles.
The Reivers are back in action this weekend in Council Bluffs.
