Reiver Women Protect Home Court, Remain Undefeated in 2020

Council Bluffs, IA - The Iowa Western women's basketball has turned a corner since entering the new year, remaining undefeated at home in 2020 after defeating Southeast Community College (NE) 70-45.

The Reivers had a dominant first quarter, putting up 25 points and shooting 61% from the field. Freshman Hayley Berfield was a spark for the Reivers to start the game, grabbing 2 steals, dishing one assist, and shooting 2-3 from beyond the arc in just the first few minutes of play. The Reivers continued to be a force on offense and entered halftime with a comfortable 41-25 lead. 

The second half showed the Reivers' dominant offense with 10 of 11 players contributing to the stat line. Balanced scoring was key for the Reivers as they prepare for post-season play. Something Head Coach Lindsey Vande Hoef is excited about, "We have a lot of depth this year across the board. Not only are we confident in our starting five but we know we have multiple players who come off the bench who can have an immediate impact on the game.

Sophomore guard Jaiden Morris, who was named ICCAC women's Division 1 player of the week, ended the contest with 12 points, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Another scoring threat on perimeter play for the Reivers was Hayley Berfield who added 10 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals. The Reivers also owned the paint, with Freshman forward Bella Sparaco dominating the boards with 9 and chipping in 8 points. Sophomore Forward Britney Epperson also grabbed 6 boards and protected the rim with 2 blocks. 

LaShawn Sweet had a standout game across the stat line. In her 24 minutes of play, the redshirt sophomore scored 10 points, grabbed 4 boards, dished 2 assists, and had 2 blocks. 

The win puts the Reivers at 15-9 on the year and 8-1 since returning from winter break. The Reivers will be back in action against Region XVI opponent Moberly Community College on Saturday, February 8. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
