Sakat breaks records, Reivers win 10 events
The #3 Ranked Women and #4 ranked Men were back in action this week splitting meets at the Washburn Open and SDSU D2/NAIA Open.
Juliana Sakat broke several records in the 5000m Friday night at the Washburn Open. She ran 16:20.80 to break the Ghanian national record, NJCAA, meet, facility, and school record. She bettered Faith Chelengat's school record by 26 seconds. This mark is the fastest time in the NJCAA this season. Also in the race was Elizabeth Ewusie who ran 18:11.43 to qualify for nationals.
On the Men's side, Barnibas Ndiwa won the 5000m to lead a trio of Reivers to qualify for nationals. He ran 14:03.94 to break the meet record, Geofrey Ronoh ran 14:17.80 in 4th place, and Victor Kemboi ran 14:47.18. At the SDSU meet Yekini Bowen had a very strong showing winning 3 events. Friday night he won the indoor discus throwing 54.80m, 18.52m for a personal best in the weight throw and finally 16.90m in the shot put. Staying in the throws, Monifa Edwards had a strong showing in the discus throwing the #7 mark in school history in 43.34m. Sarai Simpson won the shot put in a new pr of 14.59m. She also had a pr in the weight throw in 15.59m to finish 8th. Lebon Attoungbre won the triple jump in 15.12m to move to #4 in school history.
On the track, Wallace Aflamah was the 60m champion breaking the school record in 6.75 for a new personal best. Michael Francois won the 600m posting a national qualifier in 1:19.11 Nikkolai Kennedy won the 60m hurdles in a pr of 7.96 to move to #4 in school history.
Serena Grace ran 24.79 to qualify for nationals and run a collegiate best finishing 2nd. Angeline Estrada was 2nd in the 800m in 2:16.23 and teammate Wijdane Inzaline ran 2:20.96 both to go under the national qualifying time. Alyssa Kulesa hit a new pr and national qualifier in the 1000m in 3:07.60. Closing out the meet with Men's 4x4 consisting of Charmar Smith, Michael Francois, Aaron Masenge, and Nikolai Kennedy an 3:16.65 to hit the national qualifying standard.
Next up, the squad will head to the Northwest Missouri State University Bobcat Invite February 7-8.
