Kubo Powers Reiver Women to Second Tournament Win of Fall

Kubo Powers Reiver Women to Second Tournament Win of Fall

Ames, IA

Seira Kubo overcame a lower back problem, weather conditions, and getting hit by a golf ball to claim her first career victory in a collegiate event.  The freshman from Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan developed back spasms during the drive to the tournament while the wind continued to plague the Reivers' fall schedule, with gusts in the Des Moines area up to 30 miles per hour during the event.  To make matters worse, a stray golf ball found Kubo on her 14th hole, but given all that was presented, the first-year Reiver she was able to pull out a one-stroke victory over teammate Luisa Gibson.

The Reiver women also picked up their 2nd victory of the year by winning the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) invite by four strokes over Central College, a NCAA D-III team. Luisa Gibson continues to showcase her talents with her second place finish and Maya Northcutt golfed her best round of the fall to finish fourth overall.

"It seems we can't catch a break this fall with the weather," said Assistant Coach Matt Robinson. "Every tournament so far has wind blowing above 20 miles an hour if not higher. It was great to see Seira pick up her first win of the season. She has been so close in previous tournaments. Maya also had a great round. If it wasn't for her final hole, she might have won the tournament."

The team will play in their final fall event on October 19th and 20th, hosted by Grand View College in Ankeny, Iowa.
