Reivers Cap Grand Opening With a Win
COUNCIL BLUFFS - NJCAA No. 2 Iowa Western Women's Soccer capped off the grand opening ceremonies of the new John and Harriet Wiebe Football & Soccer Complex with a 1-0 victory over Western Wyoming. Iowa Western Community College celebrated the grand opening of the new facility on campus, freshman Izzy McNeil spoke alongside IWCC President Dr. Dan Kinney, thanking the Wiebe family in attendance for John and Harriet's gift to the college. Along with the facility, a $5 million endowment fund has been set up in their names to benefit future Iowa Western students.
The Reivers (11-0-2) needed just ten and a half minutes to find the game's only score. Freshman Hinami Ogushi fed a ball into the box that found the feet of Sophomore Forward Oruha Hayashi. Hayashi's initial shot was saved by Mustang Goalkeeper Addie Welsh but the deflection bounced immediately back to the right foot of the Reiver striker and she buried it into the top shelf.
Iowa Western kept the pressure up for the remainder of the half, out-shooting Western Wyoming (10-6-1) 12-2 in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Mustangs came out of the break out-physicaling the Reivers but the home team defense held strong. Goalkeeper Alice Russell saved a pair of shots in the 53rd and 62nd minute to keep the visitors off of the scoreboard.
With just one more regular season game remaining against Seminole State on Saturday, Oct. 19th, the Reivers are in full control of the ICCAC after defeating Indian Hills twice this season. The Reivers will host the Central District Tournament starting on October 25th.
