Globetrotting George Joins Reivers' Hall of Fame

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA

Iowa Western Athletics inducted their very first Harlem Globetrotter to the Athletics Hall of Fame as they held their 2019 Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Friday in Council Bluffs.

Cherelle George, the all-time leading scorer for Reiver women's basketball, joined Kasandra Anderson (Women's Soccer), Greg Timmer (Men's Soccer) & Doug Kroll (Baseball) in the 2019 class for the Athletics Hall of Fame.

In addition to her career scoring mark, George also set several single-game records during her time in Council Bluffs.  Those marks include points (49), field goals (20) and free-throws (15), all of which came during the 2004-05 season.

Cherell also still holds the all-time records for career points (1,183), field goals (443), scoring average (20.5) and steals (239) as a Reiver, as well as the single-season marks for points (792), field goals (295), scoring average (25.5) and steals (134).

Arguably the most decorated player, male or female, in the history of Reiver basketball, George went on to star at Purdue University, garnering the Big Ten's Sixth Player of the Year award.

In 2009, she was invited to a WNBA tryout with the Indiana Fever and was coaching youth basketball when she was discovered by a scout with the World's Most Famous Basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters.

"Torch" George, as she's now known around the country, became the 16th female to play for the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters and tours around the world with the team.
