Reivers knock off Top 10 Laramie County to save weekend

HOW IT HAPPENED: After a tough loss on Friday against Tyler Junior College, the Reivers faced #8 Laramie County Community College Sunday afternoon for another non-conference match up. Determined to win and confident in their roles going into the game, the Reivers kicked off the match with speed and precision. They were able to work the ball side to side through their defensive and midfield line, getting Laramie's defense to press high and compact. The Reivers then exploited the space given to them by Laramie's back line, putting balls low and diagonal into their final third, with the outside midfielders running onto the ball. During one of these opportunities, sophomore Laura Chavez was able to slide the ball into Laramie's 6 yard box, where freshman Kauany Sousa was making a lateral run into the box, putting it away in the 13th minute. During the 30th minute of the game, sophomore Alex Boss was also able to put the ball away in the back of Laramie's net after a ball from Laura Chavez, making it 2-0 going into the half. In the second half of the match, the Reivers continued to maintain possession and exploit their outside backs, but was unable to put a few more in goal. The match finished with a 2-0 win for the Iowa Western Reivers.

NOTES & NUMBERS: Sophomore goalkeeper Whitney Dockweiler earned her third shutout of the 2018 season. Freshman Kauany Sousa got her 5th goal of the season and sophomore Alex Boss, her 2nd on the year for the Reivers. Sophomore Laura Chavez also earned her third and fourth assists of the season.
