Reivers clinch ICCAC conference title with 5-0 victory over Scott CC

Bettendorf, IA – The Reivers clinch the ICCAC conference title after their 5-0 win over Scott CC on Saturday. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  In the fourth minute of the match, freshman midfielder Laura Chavez slipped a ball through to freshman forward Ashley Overberg, who cleanly struck the ball into the net to give the Reivers the 1-0 lead.  Six minutes later, sophomore midfielder Claire Groves capitalized on a ricochet off the post to give the Reivers their second goal of the game.  No more than a minute later, Groves struck again with an assist from freshman midfielder Abby Hall.  The Reivers kept the pressure on Scott for the remainder of the first half and went into the break with a 3-0 lead.  Freshman goalkeeper Mandy Clark and the Iowa Western back line comprised of Veronica Herrera, Alex Allgaier, Kate Reddish, and Sofia Colvin shut down the Hawks' attack.

 

Iowa Western continued to dictate the tempo of the match in the second half.  In the 61st minute, Groves laid the ball off for sophomore defender Kate Reddish, who pounded the ball into the goal.  In the 71st minute, sophomore midfielder Daniela Cardona scored Iowa Western's fifth and final goal with assists from Chavez and freshman forward Alex Boss.  Freshman goalkeepers Paula Conde and Brittany Hustig split time in the second half.  Conde had one save for the Reivers and Hustig had two in the match to help secure the shutout.  Iowa Western's victory earned the ICCAC conference title and the first seed for the Region XI tournament. 

 

NOTES & NUMBERS:  Ashley Overberg scored with an assist from Laura Chavez in the 4th minute.  Claire Groves scored unassisted in the 11th minute.  Groves scored again with an assist from Hall in the 12th minute.  Kate Reddish scored off of a Claire Groves assist in the 61st minute.  Daniela Cardona scored off of assists from Laura Chavez and Alex Boss in the 71st minute.

"I felt we started strong and continued to dominate the game throughout the entire match.  We decided to push forward and really utilize our skills in order to finish them off," Allgood said.  "We always come out with an intense attitude and we know that we need to keep that intensity for the whole match."
