Reivers Jump Ahead of Weather, Sweep Lakers at Home

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Iowa Western welcomed Iowa Lakes to the Reiver Sports Complex on Friday as the Lakers opened their season and IWCC extended their win streak to eleven with a doubleheader sweep.

Katriana Bain tripled home a pair of runs and also scored a pair as the Reivers outlasted the Lakers 6-2 in game one.  Reigning NJCAA Pitcher of the Week Brook Melynchuk earned her eighth win of the season, striking out eleven in another complete-game performance.  The sophomore allowed just five hits and moved her record on the season to 8-1.

Iowa Lakes grabbed two runs in the opening inning of game two, but IWCC rallied for a five-inning, 10-2, victory.  Hannah Smart moved to 5-0 as the Reivers backed her with seven runs in the 3rd inning and three more in the 5th.  Karlie Chonis drove in four runs, two on a slam to left, as she went 4-6 on the day and scored three runs in the sweep.

"We had two good team wins and we showed that offensively." Said Chonis, the freshman from Omaha, "We brought a lot of energy the second game and we never gave up when we got down in the 1st (inning).  The bats woke up heavy in the third and we had quality defense to back it up.  I'm excited to see how we continue to grow throughout the remainder of the season."

Aujenai Gregory also drove in a pair in game two, while Taya Opheim joined Chonis with a pair of runs scored in the game.

The Reivers will take the show on the road on Wednesday when they travel to Norfolk, Nebraska to take on Northeast CC.
