Softball splits with #3 Highland, sweeps State Fair

Council Bluffs, IA -- Iowa Western went 3-1 over the weekend against State Fair Community College and NJCAA D2 #3 ranked Highland Community College.  The Reivers split with Highland CC on Friday, losing the first game 10-9 but were able to take game two with a 10-9 score.  On Saturday, the Reivers earned the sweep over State Fair, 2-0 and 4-0.

The Reivers lost in the bottom of the seventh inning on a walk-off homerun to drop game one.  However, IWCC responded back in game two with a 10-9 win.  Allison O'Driscoll and Brielle Chisholm each added a homerun in the game, but Tyla Lee was the hero, hitting two out of the park including the game winner in the 6th inning to give Iowa Western the 10-9 lead.  Alison Arndt came on in relief and got the win during her 2 1/3 innings of work.

Dominating pitching led the way for the Reivers on Saturday, throwing back to back shut-outs to collect two more wins.  Brieanna Brock threw a gem in the first game.  She struck out seven while only surrendering three hits, notching the win for the Reivers.  Zoe Hicks followed her with a shut-out of her own in game two, allowing four hits while striking out twelve State Fair batters.

Freshman Tyla Lee was pleased with the four game set, "Going 3-1 over the weekend was exciting, especially winning the second game against Highland.  I think we hit really well during that double header.  Our energy was better against Highland than it was against State Fair and I think that showed on Saturday but our pitching carried us to a couple more wins.  Moving forward, I think that if we keep our energy up and play Reiver softball we'll be very successful as the season continues."
