Reivers sweep State Fair in Season Opener

Sedalia, MO -- The Reivers softball team got the season underway with two wins against State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO on Wednesday.  Iowa Western took the first game 9-3 and won 15-9 in the nightcap.  Sophomores, Brieanna Brock and Zoe Hicks, got the wins in the circle.

In game one, Brieanna Brock took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering two hits and a run.  Brock struck out seven State Fair batters through five before giving way to freshman Michaela Epp who closed the game.  The Reivers collected 10 hits and were led at the plate by Naomi Terrazas (3-4, two runs scored), Zoe Hicks (2-2, two RBI's, and three runs), Tyla Lee (2-4, two runs, a double, and an RBI), and Allison O'Driscoll (3-4, two RBI's, and a double).

The nightcap saw its share of struggles.  Iowa Western let a 10-3 lead slip to 10-9 before rallying off five unanswered runs to get the 15-9 win.  Zoe Hicks notched the win throwing four innings in the circle, striking out four and giving up three runs.  Offensively, the Reivers pounded out 18 hits, with seven different players having multi-hit games.  "By no means did we play our best softball today, we made several mental mistakes during the game," said Head Coach Ben Greer, "But I was encouraged by our ability to fight through adversity.  We did a lot of good things today but definitely a lot to work on."

Allison O'Driscoll, a freshman catcher from Colorado Springs, CO, went 6-9 at the plate while driving in four runs on the day and had this to say about the games, "That second game was the most fun game I've ever been a part of in my softball career.  It was really cool to see how even when we started to slow down our pace, a light went off in all of our heads and we flipped the switch and came back with a lot of heart. We had girls lighting it up at the plate, we were diving all over the field, and the energy was amazing.  After yesterday's effort I'm really excited to see what's next as we continue to grow as a team."

The Reivers get back in action on Sunday against #8 NEO A&M.  First pitch set for 2pm.
