Mike Blackbourn is the longest-tenured assistant coach on the Iowa Western staff, entering his 16th season with the Reivers in 2024-25.  Coach Blackbourn helped Head Coach Scott Strohmeier get the program off the ground, coming to Council Bluffs in 2008.  The two go even farther back, as Blackbourn joined Strohmeier in 2007 as part of the North Iowa Area Community College Trojans coaching staff where he helped the Trojans to a 7-4 season and their second straight trip to the Graphic Edge Bowl.

Blackbourn then helped transition the move to Iowa Western where his defenses have been a force to be reckoned with.  In 15 seasons under Coach Blackbourn, Iowa Western defenses have held their opponents to an average of 263 yards of offense per game while allowing just 1.8 touchdowns per contest.  The “Darkside” has also averaged 36.5 sacks yearly and recorded 29.6 takeaways per season.

The 2023 defensive squad set the school record for sacks in a season with 62.0 and tied the IWCC record for takeaways in a season with 38.

A decade of defensive dominance.  Coach Blackbourn’s “Darkside” ranks first in the NJCAA in All-Americans (38), scoring defense (14.9), total defense (256), and takeaways (291) in the past 10 seasons.

Defensive End Jackson Filer and Linebacker Jacob Ellis have earned the last two NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year Awards under Coach Blackbourn. Linebacker Jacob Ellis became Coach Blackbourn's first NJCAA Defensive National Player of the Year in 2021, tallying 63 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, and 4 interceptions.

Coach Blackbourn hails from Freeport, Illinois, and played linebacker at South Dakota State University where he received his Bachelor's degree in Sociology and his Master’s degree in Athletic Administration.

Coach Blackbourn lives in Council Bluffs with his two daughters, Maddie and Amelia, and his son Archer along with their dog Mauli.
