CRETE, NE

The Iowa Western Indoor Track & Field season opened up on Saturday at the Ward Haylet Invite in Crete, NE.  The Reivers turned in three national qualifying standards. The meet started off with the field events, where freshman Jonathan Whitcomb leaped to a PR in the pole vault with a jump of 4.00m that put him in top spot on the NJCAA leaderboard. Sophomore, Marcus Klein won the long jump with a leap of 6.86m which also put him in the top spot on the NJCAA lead board. Also in the jumps, sophomore David Ejumeta started the season with a bang by winning the triple jump and qualifying for the national meet to be held in Lubbock at the end of February.  Ejumeta's leap is also the best mark in the country at 14.54m.

On the women's side, freshman Zakiya Phillip-Horsford is sitting in the top spot in the women's weight throw with a toss of 12.90m.

The sprinters also had a great day as freshman Traci Brown turned in a blazing time to win the open 60m at 7.64 which leads the country and qualified her for the national indoor tack meet.  The men were led by sophomore Sal Fidone. Fidone turned in a 7.08 in the 60m, good enough for fifth on the leaderboard and a 22.73 in the 200m which has him sitting in second.

Freshman Denzel Downing had an outstanding meet running 8.42 in the 60m hurdles taking first place and pole position in the NJCAA rankings as well. Neri Getraide won the 1000m with a time of 3:16.27 which is the fastest time in NJCAA to finish the day off the men's 4x400m relay ran a time of 3:23.16 to be the number one relay team in NJCAA.

The Reivers will be back in action next week, splitting the teams and sending half to the University of Nebraska and the other hald to Doane.
