Los Angeles Rams select Louisville football's Trevon Young in sixth round of NFL draft

When Trevon Young lay in a hospital bed two years ago with a long scar on his hip, he faced questions about whether he would ever play football again. He is now an NFL draft pick.

The Los Angeles Rams drafted the veteran pass rusher Saturday with the 205th overall pick (sixth round) in the draft, rewarding Young after a difficult five-year college career.

Two years after Young suffered a devastating hip injury in the 2015 Music City Bowl, he played in all 13 games last season and started 12. The injury and surgery sidelined him for all of 2016 until he returned to practice full-speed in fall camp last year. He finished the season with 62 tackles, 12 for loss, 4.5 sacks, five pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

He had 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception as a junior in 2015. The injury was a non-contact injury, but he fractured and dislocated his left hip, underwent surgery and faced an arduous recovery process.

"There's a point where, the type of injury I had, I couldn't use my legs for a good while," Young said at the NFL scouting combine. "So I didn't know what was going to happen until I got up and could run again."

But Young returned to the field last year and became a strong pass rusher once again, never suffering any setbacks in the healing process. Another successful season earned him an invitation to the combine, where he ran a 4.78 40-yard dash and finished with 25 reps on the bench press.

Young said he faced questions from all angles about the hip injury but said, "I don't feel like a lot of people expected me to come back from that type of injury, and I feel like me being here now just proves that I'm willing to work and do whatever it takes to play football."
