Reivers Take Down Coffeyville in Doubleheader Sweep

Council Bluffs, Iowa

When life gives you rain in the forecast ... you make schedule changes.  With forecasted inclement weather on the way canceling IWCC's upcoming weekend series with Mott CC, Head Coach Marc Rardin hopped on the phone and made sure it wasn't a wasted weekend for his team.  Enter Coffeyville CC into the picture.  The D-1 Red Ravens rolled into Doc Ross Field Friday for doubleheader action.

Game one played out as an instant classic.  Both squads grabbed a first-inning run in front of what would become a pitcher's duel.  Peyton Zabel pitched 4.1 innings of four-hit ball, striking out six, before giving way to Conner Mackay (2-1) who struck out four in a perfect 2.2 innings to earn his second win of the season.  Thatcher Kozal's seventh-inning single plated his brother, pinch-runner Treyton Kozal, to give the Reivers the walk-off, 2-1, victory.

The bats woke up in game two, at least for the Reivers.  The Red Ravens staked themselves to another one-run, first-inning lead and held it until the fourth when the Reivers took advantage of a Coffeyville passed ball to tie the game and then went ahead on a groundout for a 2-1 lead.  The Reivers tacked more on in the fifth.  Auggie Rasmussen crushed an RBI triple and Dylan Robertson drove in a pair on a 2-run double before Benjamin Palmer and Jacob Shamban followed with RBI singles to extend the lead to 8-2 after five.  IWCC plated five more in the sixth to put the game out of reach in the 13-2, 9-inning final.  Robertson led six Reivers with multiple hits, going 3-5 in the game.  Palmer drove in four, while Shamban plated three teammates and Carter Wright scored a team-high three runs.  Harrison Cook struck out seven in five innings of work to earn the victory and IWCC improved to 9-2 with their seventh straight win.

With this weekend's games against Mott canceled, the Reivers will next see action on Wednesday against ICCAC opponent Northeast (NE) in a St. Patrick's day doubleheader.  First pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm at Doc Ross Field.  Both games can be watched on the Reiver Sports Network.
