Home Opening Jousts with Knights Ruled by Reivers

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Reivers Baseball had the perfect weather weekend to open their 2021 home slate at 'the Doc' and they took full advantage in a four-game series sweep.

'Team 47' pounded out 49 hits and plated 46 runs in the pair of doubleheaders against Dakota County Technical College.

In game one of the series, the Reivers doubled five times, two by catcher Logan Jordan as the Reivers plated five in the third inning and another pair in the fifth to win the home-opener, 7-1.  Jordan drove in and scored pair on a two-hit day, while left fielder Aaron Staehely added another pair of RBI.  Peyton Zabel won his second game of the year, striking out nine Blue Knights in five innings of work.

Iowa Western was on DCTC from the start in game two of opening day.  IWCC plated five after Kyle Huckstorf scored on a Dayvin Johnson triple to start the avalanche.  Johnson's triple was just one of three the Reivers would smack in the 14-0 five-inning affair.  Third baseman Chase Spoonemore drove in four runs in a 3-4 performance, while his corner counterpart Jaden Brown drove in a pair.  Catcher Carter Wright scored three runs for IWCC as the club swept day one.  Harrison Cook earned his first victory of the season, striking out eight in a complete-game performance.

The Reivers enjoyed scoring five so much on Friday that they did it twice in Saturday's opener.  The Reivers plated five in the second and again in the third to win another shortened contest, 10-0.  Thatcher Kozal had the loudest hit of the day from the designated hitter position, while Spoonemore tripled and Brady Prewitt and Clay Cutter each doubled as part of the Reivers four extra-base hits in the contest.  Kozal, Prewitt, and Cutter each drove in a pair, while four Reivers scored twice in the win.  Evan O'Toole (2-0) earned the victory with four innings of one-hit work and Samson Holcomb worked a perfect inning in relief.

The series finale was the most productive of the four offensively for DCTC, unfortunately for the Blue Knights, it was also the Reivers biggest day on the scoreboard as IWCC put up nine in the bottom half of the first.  Logan Jordan picked up a pair of RBI and Kyle Huckstorf scored two of his three runs scored in the inning as the Reivers batted around in the first.  Carter Wright drove in three to lead the RBI attack, while three others drove in a pair.  Connor Mackay led a balanced pitching performance with a pair of innings of work as the Reivers allowed the Blue Knights to their highest output of the series in a 15-4 victory.

Next up for Head Coach Marc Rardin's squad is a 9-inning tilt with Des Moines Area CC.  The game will not count toward the conference standings, despite both teams belonging to the ICCAC.  That game can be watched on the Reiver Sports Network.
